Chromebook White Screen of Death: How to Fix It

A Chromebook stuck on a blank white screen is nearly always software, not a broken display. The hard reset, the recovery image and the panel check, in order.

A Chromebook that boots to a blank white screen and stops there looks like a dead display and almost never is one. The panel is clearly receiving power and clearly lighting every pixel, which rules out most hardware faults immediately. What has usually happened is that the system has stopped somewhere between firmware and desktop, and the last thing it drew is an empty white frame.

Work through these in order. The early steps cost nothing and fix most cases; the later ones erase local files, so do not skip ahead.

1. Hard reset

This is the fix for the majority of white screen Chromebooks, and it does not delete anything. Hold the Refresh key, the circular arrow above 3 or 4 on the top row, and press the Power button while holding it. Keep Refresh held for a couple of seconds after the machine starts, then let go. On a Chromebook tablet, hold Volume Up and Power together for about ten seconds instead.

A hard reset resets the embedded controller, which is the small chip that handles power, the keyboard and the display backlight. When that controller gets into a confused state, the symptoms look exactly like a broken screen.

2. Rule out an external display and a stuck key

Disconnect everything: monitors, docks, USB hubs, adapters, even a mouse. A Chromebook that thinks it has an external display attached will happily render the desktop to nothing at all and leave the built in panel white. Then check that no key is physically stuck down, particularly Escape, Refresh and Power, since a stuck key can hold the machine in a recovery state that presents as a blank screen.

Try the brightness keys too. If the white screen dims and brightens, the display, the backlight and the graphics path are all working, which narrows the problem to software almost conclusively.

3. Drain the battery completely

If the hard reset did nothing, unplug the charger and leave the machine until it powers off on its own, which may take some hours on a white screen. Some models have a slower path through the same problem that only clears on a genuine full power cycle. Plug it in, leave it charging for half an hour, then start it again.

On models with a removable back panel and an accessible battery connector, disconnecting the battery for a minute achieves the same thing immediately. Only do this if you are comfortable inside a laptop.

4. Powerwash, then recovery

If the machine reaches a login screen at any point, a Powerwash resets Chrome OS to factory state while keeping the operating system itself intact. Your Google account restores your settings afterwards, but anything stored only in the Downloads folder is gone, so recover that first if you can.

If it never reaches a login screen, the next step is recovery, which reinstalls Chrome OS from a USB stick. You need a second computer, a USB drive of 8GB or more, and the official Chromebook Recovery Utility, which downloads the correct image for your exact model. Get into recovery mode by holding Escape and Refresh and pressing Power, then follow the prompts. This erases the local drive completely.

Recovery is the point at which most white screen Chromebooks come back. A corrupted system partition, which is what a failed or interrupted update leaves behind, produces exactly this symptom and is exactly what recovery repairs.

5. Only now, check the panel

If recovery completes and the screen is still white, or if recovery cannot run at all, it is worth testing the display properly. Plug the Chromebook into an external monitor or a television with the right adapter. If the external display shows a normal desktop, the machine is fine and the built in panel or its cable is the fault. If the external display shows the same white screen, the problem is still in the system, not the panel.

Once it is running, open the monitor test on the built in display and run the colour screens. A panel that shows white correctly but cannot show black, or that shows white with dark patches, has a genuine fault. A panel that renders all nine test colours correctly never had one.

When it is worth repairing

Chromebooks are mostly inexpensive machines with expensive display assemblies, and a panel or cable replacement often costs a meaningful fraction of a new unit. Check the auto update expiry date for your model before spending anything: every Chromebook has a date after which it stops receiving Chrome OS updates, and repairing a machine that is already past it is rarely worth doing.

If the Chromebook belongs to a school or an employer, stop here and hand it to whoever manages it. Managed devices are enrolled in a domain, recovery can un enrol them, and re enrolment needs administrator access you probably do not have.
